tranny fluid with their stock stuff in 94, I bought my 92 NA in 92 with 4k on Odo, was a dealer exec car. The Nissan dealer used Valvoline 75w 90. Because it was a rated GL,3,4,5 fluid you would think ok because it had the GL4 rating per the manual. After talking with the oil manufactures I find out that the GL ratings are for differentials and they are forward compatible - i.e. if diffy was spec'ed for GL3 or GL4 a GL5 is ok. Not true for syncro trannys. They are spec'ed for GL4 so certain gear oils will mess up the syncros. Never knew that. After the gear oil change the car got progressively worse and shifting from 1 to 2 was almost impossible and really bad in the other gears. The local Nissan dealer would do nothing saying I messed it up. I contacted the Nissan SE Zone manager and he came and test drove the car and they finally gave me a new tranny with factory OEM fluid. After 30K I decided to replace the fluid, bad move, couldn't get the OEM stuff used in Japan. I tried several brands including MT90 and Amsoil but they all didn't work well, tranny developed a 2nd gear bearing whine and shifted notchy. Crap now what? Called Royal Purple tech and asked about their Max Gear 75w 90 in the tranny and they confirmed it was ok since it is a low corrosive gear oil and is compatible with soft metals and not mess up the syncros. So I tried Royal Purple Max Gear 75w 90 and all was better, the bearing whine is virtually gone and shifting great. That was over 10 years ago and it has been replaced twice since then, car now has 92K. Only bad is the present price @ $20/qt., but not bad if done every about every 4 years or 30K and it solves the problem. Go figure?: these tranny's are like women, finicky but great when they get what they want, Ha!
